What does TB-500 mean?

Read the exact substance name before reading the claimed result. Similar names can hide a large difference.

The short chain, its name and its studies

The lab-made TB-500 chain contains 7 protein building blocks.

A small extra chemical part is joined to one end of that chain.

Thymosin beta-4 is the natural, longer protein; its chain contains 43 building blocks.

The body makes the longer protein; that does not make TB-500 itself a natural substance made by the body.

The copied part holds onto actin, a protein that helps cells change shape and move.

FDA says the added chemical part may change how the short chain acts.

This work on cells and animals does not show how TB-500 would affect healing in people.

The nickname is not enough

FDA describes TB-500 as a common name rather than an official medicine name.

Its review found different chemical forms using that name and flagged the chance of getting a different substance than intended.

Ask for the full substance name and the form being discussed.

If an explanation keeps switching between names, ask the person to slow down and spell out the difference.

Keep each study with its own substance

Results from human tests of whole thymosin beta-4 do not establish how TB-500 behaves in people.

When someone points to a paper, start with its substance name and the way it was tested.
